“Be Original”

This new website was a mobile, tablet, and desktop experience designed to promote the upcoming programming broadcast series for Sundance TV. To tie into the show narrative of personal expression, we created a site that enabled users to build personal stories using images, video, and copy via the editor feature. To begin the whole process, users signed with their social account (or use guest option), selected from their photo albums the images and videos, then used the editor to arrange them to be capture the theme or concept of their personal story. Each frame of the story allowed for captioning or dialog input. Once the creative work met the user’s expectations, they could publish the story live, to be showcased in our catalog of works, then share with their with family and friends on Instagram or Facebook with a unique hashtag.

The overall impact of the campaign was very successful as the site saw healthy traffic levels for an extended period of time. Hundreds of stories were created of fans of the series.

My recollection of the development process on this work brings back memories of overcoming or solving for splines. I wanted the spline to be less like a traditional clothesline which is strung up at each end, but instead more of a chaotic geometric roller coaster. The line held cards (or frame) of the story that users could drag back and forth. Another key challenge was conveying the notion of momentum, and it’s effect on each card as a result of user’s dragging the line. It was important to me that the hanging cards sway independently. To capture this movement correctly I programmed the cards to have unique psychics properties (e.g.: dampening) that could be altered on a card-by-card basis. I remember celebrating the day I got the chaotic clothesline with hanging cards feature working to perfection. Small victories are worth stopping to recognize along the way, and it is one of my I implement with the teams I direct today.
