With an ever-increasing amount of web traffic Android.com is prepared for all eventualities. Whether it’s organic, social, direct, or referral traffic Android has found a way to make the 404 errors less catastrophic.

Direct and referral traffic results in most 404 errors due to misspellings of the address or outdated links.

player scored higher than 404 points

With this understanding, we proposed the following solution. Instead of presenting the audience with an error message, why not drive that traffic towards major user flows (e.g., wear or tablets) or maybe have a little fun with it?

For Android.com, we re-imagined the concept of receiving the status code of 404 and decided to take into account both camps, designing a page that allowed the user to select major traffic destinations, and the second option which allowed them to play a game.

Consequently, our team came up with the idea of presenting the audience with a WebGL-powered game that drew on the inspiration of recent Android OS.

Under the hood, the game utilizes PixiJS (an HTML5 engine with a 2D WebGL renderer), our propriety sound engine, and JavaScript for the business logic.

All original 3D modeling was created onsite by our motion designer using Maya. All content was exported as sprite sheets for easy animation inclusions.
